SOME DATES OF THE MILLENNIUM HISTORY OF TIMBUKTU.

 

  • 11 th Century: supposed foundation of the city.
  • 1325: the Emperor Kankan Moussa begins construction of the famous mosque of Dingereiber.
  • 1328: Completion of the Djingereiber mosque.
  • 1353: Ibn Battûta, the Arab Traveller (originating from Tangier) visits the City.
  • 15th Century: Construction of the mosque of Sankoré, with dimensions of Kaaba.
  • 1458: Storming on the city by Sonni Ali Ber, the Songhaï Emperor.
  • 1590: Collapse of the Songhaï Empire and passage of the city under Moroccan domination
  • 1591: Rising of the City, most famous scientists of the City, including Ahmed Baba, are exiled in Marrakech.
  • 1630: The Chronicler Abderhaman Sâdi describes his City in his book “Tarikh be-Sudan”.
  • 1760: The Tuaregs drive out the last Morrocans of the City.
  • 1825: The Empire of Maasina conquers the City.
  • 1826: Major Gordon Laing visits the City. Taken for a merchant of slaves, he is assassinated.
  • 1844: Death of Cheikou Hamadou and emancipation of the City.
  • 1828 : The French explorer Réné Caillé enters to the City, hidden under the costume of a muslim scholar. The story of this journey was subject of a big outcry i n Europe.
  • 1854 : The German Explorer Heinrich Barth stays six month in Timbuktu.
  • 1894 : The French colonizing power conquers the City.
  • 1914 : End of colonial pacification of northern zones of the French Sudan
  • 1955 : Gao, administrative capital of Timbuktu, becomes a commune of medium power, then of full power, in 1966
  • March 26, 1996 : Ceremony of the « Flame of Peace » during which 3.000 weapons used in the rebellion period (nineties) were burned.
